Why do ostriches bury their heads in the sand?

Have you seen an ostrich before?

I am talking of that flightless colourful bird with long legs and a long beak.

There is this myth about why Ostriches bury their head in the sand.

This myth says that Ostriches bury their head in the sand so that they can hide away from predators.

Sounds funny right?

Though it’s just a myth because it’s actually unreasonable to hide away from predators by burying one’s head in the sand so that as you cannot see them, you have the illusion that they cannot see you.

But one may wonder;

How long will they last that way before the predator devours them, besides it would not be able to breathe either.

But it makes sense to me in a way though, I will tell you why at the end.

But that is not the real reason why Ostriches bury their head in the sand.

why do ostriches bury their heads in the sand?

Because Ostriches are flightless, they do not have the ability to build their nests in the trees.

So they lay their eggs in holes dug in the ground.

And if you still remember your biology well enough, heat and warmth are required for adequate incubation of eggs.

So to make sure that their eggs are evenly heated, Ostriches stick their head in the sand where the eggs are buried to rotate it frequently.

This makes it look as though they are trying to hide.

So hence the myth;

An Ostrich trying to hide from predators won’t last for long and it won’t be able to breathe either.

Now you know why Ostriches bury their head in the mud.

But that’s by the way.

So what lesson am I trying to teach you using this myth about Ostrich hiding away from predators by burying their heads in the sand?

Lessons For New Entrepreneurs Who Are Introverts

Before I started Affiliate Marketing with Expertnaire, I was a very shy type and never liked posting things on my social media pages.

Then I used only my blog to write posts on Affiliate products and review them.

But after I discovered the secret of Affiliate marketing with Whatsapp, I knew I had to do more, because I saw the great potential that WhatsApp had to boost my affiliate sales.

I knew immediately that I had to start posting frequently on my WhatsApp status, and on all my social pages.

At least, if not for anything else, to grab some attention and sell my products.

But I had one challenge…

I asked myself;

How will I just start promoting products on Whatsapp just all of a sudden? What will people think or say?

I knew for sure that I would lose a lot of people and that my WhatsApp status view counts will drop initially because the majority of the people are only interested in catching cruises on WhatsApp, sharing memes, and the rest.

So I was deeply worried about what will happen if I suddenly just started being all that serious about my life coupled with all the perceived expectations from people.

This was where I knew I had to apply the ideology of the myth about Ostriches burying their head in the Sand.

So what did I do??

I thought of a way I could hide my head in the sand without seeing people’s faces while posting content on my Whatsapp status.

In summary;

I turned off my read receipts on Whatsapp

This way I do not know who viewed my post, or who did not.

And surprisedly, with time I stopped worrying about what people thought about my posts and contents until I never cared completely.

And until I got comfortable expressing my thoughts and feelings about anything without fear of favor from anyone.

And today, I have turned on my read receipts again, and here are the things I discovered;

  • I lost a lot of friends who no longer view my status
  • Currently, I know people who are constantly waiting for me to post so that they can know if there is a new update in online business or affiliate marketing
  • I also have those people who are just stalking and looking for things to talk about
  • Also, my WhatsApp status views started increasing again…but this time the viewers are new friends I acquired who are interested in what I share.

But most importantly, I no longer care about who sees my posts and who does not.

Why does this work so well?

Just like the Ostrich myth, the human brain is wired to only think about those things it perceives through any of the five senses.

Think about it,

If you have never tasted sugar before, how would you know it is sweet?

Also, if you do not know who views your status, how will you care what they think??

So throughout that time I turned on my read receipts on WhatsApp, I never knew the people who saw what I posted, so when next I plan to post, I don’t think of what nobody will say about the contents I post.

So I just go ahead and post anything I want to post shamelessly.

And today, I have gotten a lot better at being myself while writing and while creating content meant for my audience.

I found my real voice, which is not subject to bias or human interference.

I also found it a lot easier to be truthful and honest when writing any content because I have nobody to please.

And remember, I am still an introvert…nothing changed.

So my friend, when next you want to post something you think might benefit you on your WhatsApp status…

But you still worry about what people will think or say,

Go ahead and turn off your read receipts...

It does a lot of miracles.

I wish you luck in your entrepreneurship journey.
