Not every health center, public or private hospital have blood banks in Nigeria.

One of the major challenges affecting Voluntary blood donation in Nigeria Negatively is the lack of available resources needed to procure a quality blood bank.

Another is the lack of resources needed to maintain an already available blood bank.

This is because something as basic as a steady power supply and electricity is fundamental to its maintenance.

What is a Blood Bank?

A blood bank is a place for the collection, storage, and preservation of blood and its products for future use.

The blood bank is not just the machine/refrigerator that freezes and stores blood.

It also serves as a place where blood is collected, processed, and screened for usability.

In many hospitals in Nigeria, blood banks are built as a separate division in the hospital, while in others, they will need a blood banking service to procure blood from other centers with functional blood banks.

Are the Blood Products from Blood Banks Given to Patients For Free?

In a hospital or a health center with a functional blood bank, blood from voluntary non-paid donors is given to patients free of charge.

But depending on the hospital, the patient is meant to pay for the service charges which include testing and screening the blood for usability. In other hospitals, these services are rendered free of charge to patients.

On the other hand, in a hospital or health center without a blood bank, and the blood is being donated by a voluntary non-paid donor, the patient will pay both for the screening and delivery (transportation) of the blood. Also, some hospitals may decide to write off the charges completely.

But if the blood was donated by a commercial blood donor, then the patient will have to pay for the blood, and for all the service charges.

Almost every state has blood banks in Nigeria. These are mostly government hospitals and teaching hospitals and centers owned by voluntary organizations.
