Sometimes suffering from a chronic illness can be very devastating. And most of the time being in such a condition might leave you searching for comfort, affirmations, and hope. One of the places where one can find this comfort and hope is in the Bible and this post is about the health verses in the Bible and what they could mean.

I had the opportunity to go through the Bible as much as 3 times in the past 15 years. The credit goes to my high school; owned by the catholic church and some personal studies. And in the course of reading them, I have come across many passages that are related to healing, hope, and many other health-related verses in the bible. The ones I have compiled on this post are the health verses in the bible which I resonate most with.

There are numerous stories in the bible about healing, health, and well-being. But in searching, I was looking strictly for those who inculcate both healing, hope, comfort and which could even be used as positive affirmations in times of ill health. And after my research, I found these verses below. I hope you find healing, peace, and hope while reading and meditating on them. Please remember to check out the disclaimer in the last paragraph.

3 John 1:2

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Meaning: This is a personal prayer from John the apostle wishing good health of mind and body to everyone reading his message about Christ. He referred to these people as friends because they share the same belief with him; ‘The salvation of the world through Jesus Christ.

This is a good prayer for ‘believers’ and the best response is just an AMEN.

Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

You must have also heard about a similar saying that; ‘laughter is the best medicine. King Solomon, the author of the book of Proverbs in the Bible reminds us that a cheerful heart is a good medicine. Here, a cheerful heart signifies someone who is free-spirited, unworried by the negative happenings in life, and one who chooses happiness instead of sadness or sorrow.

A similar philosophy can be traced back to the story of the 3 laughing monks in a small village in ancient China whose missionary journey was to spread love, happiness, and peace by their laughter. These monks never said a word in all their missionary journeys, all they did was laugh in the center of every village they entered. And wherever they are, the people are infected by their laughter and this laughter spreads through the village and everyone living around lived happily.

In the same way, to have a cheerful heart, this health verse in the Bible reminds us to always laugh off our problems and struggles and even illnesses. Being cheerful and showing gratitude for the life we have revives our crushed spirit and dried bones and is the best medicine for good health.

Deuteronomy 7:15

The Lord will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you.

This is a promise made by God to the Israelites while they were on their way to the promised land. He promised to protect them from every disease especially the ones they encountered in Egypt (probably the plagues). But the part where it all gets scary is when he says he will inflict them on all who hate them. Certainly, no one would wish such a thing to befall even their arch enemies.

By the way, the point here is that by trusting God, he will set you free from every illness even the rare (horrible) ones.

Jeremiah 33:6

Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.

This is similar to the one above. A promise made by God through Jeremiah his prophet about healing those who believe in Him and giving them peace and protection.

Proverbs 4:20-22

20 My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words
21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart
22 For they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body

Definitely words of wisdom give life to those who abide by them. By this, I mean that if you follow the right way of doing things, you will never run into trouble, let alone fall sick. You can liken the words of wisdom here to the advice from your doctors and caregivers. If you follow them accordingly, your health will be restored.

Proverbs 3:7-8

7 Do not be wise in your own eye; fear the Lord and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

This interpretation is also similar to the one above. If you do what is right in terms of maintaining good health, you reduce your chances of falling sick.

Psalms 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds

This is one of the most comforting health verses in the bible. When you are tired of your ill health when it seems as though all hope is lost, always come back to this verse for hope restoration.

If your heart is broken due to failed promises, just like the Psalmist says; he will bind up your wounds and make you whole again.

Matthew 9:12

On hearing this, Jesus said; “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”

Personally, I feel that this health verse in the bible is emphasizing on the need for assurance about our health state. I have seen people who like going to hospitals due to fear of being sick. I am using this health verse in the bible to remind them that it is the sick who needs a doctor not the healthy. I am not trying to say that going for regular checkups is bad. But sometimes, when you have this compulsive behavior of seeking for on your current state of health, you may end up getting what you are looking for.

Isiah 57:18-19

I have seen their ways, but I will heal them. I will guide them and reward them with comfort. And for those who mourn, I will create a reason for praise: utter prosperity to those far and near, and I will heal them, says the Lord.

This is also one of the health verses in the bible that reveals God’s promise of healing to his people. It can serve as powerful affirmations in times of sickness.

Jeremiah 30:17

James 5:14-15

If any of you are sick, they should for the elders of the church, and the elders should pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. Prayer that comes from faith will heal the sick, for the Lord will restore them to health. And if they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

This health verse in the bible is advice from apostles to the followers of Christ on how best to handle illnesses. They are advising the believers not just to visit the hospitals for healing, but to also call on the elders of the church for prayers whenever they fall sick.

Mark 6:56

Wherever he went - villages, cities, or farming communities - they would place the sick in the market places and beg him to allow them to touch even the hem of his clothing. Everyone who touched him was healed.

This is in praise of the handwork of God on the villages as Christ passed through them. It spreads a message of hope to the sick that Christ could still heal them if they spiritually connect with him.

Psalm 6:2

Have mercy on me, Lord, because I’m frail. Heal me, Lord, because my bones are shaking in terror!

This is a prayer of submission to God for strength and healing. It teaches us that if we accept our weakness, be humble and call on God’s name, he will heal us from our sicknesses.

Matthew 8:1-3

Now, when Jesus had come down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. A man with a skin disease came, kneeled before him, and said; Lord, if you want, you can make me clean. Jesus reached out his hand and touched him saying, ‘I do want to, become clean!’ Instantly his skin disease was cleansed.

This bible verse emphasizes the importance of asking for and believing in healing from God. The sick man knew Christ and believed in his power to heal him. And he never hesitated to ask him for help. Sometimes, what we might just need is just to ask with sincerity and our body will be made whole.

Matthew 9:20-22

Then a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years came up behind Jesus and touched the hem of his clothes. She thought; “If only I could touch his robe I’ll be healed.’ When Jesus turned and saw her, he said; “Be encouraged, daughter. Your faith has healed you. And the woman was healed from that time on.

This is another health verse in the bible that emphasizes the importance of faith in God for healing.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me Lord, and I will be healed. Save me and I will be saved, for you are my heart’s desire.

This shows absolute faith and trust in God’s power to heal one from various diseases.
